EPIC WHITE WATER RAFTING
Both the New River and the Gauley River are well known for their world class Class III to V rapids. The Gauley is one of the top five rafting rivers in the world and one of the top three in the U.S.- and it’s right here in our own backyard! For all you die-hard adrenaline junkies craving the ultimate thrill-inducing adventure, the Upper Gauley, better known as the “Beast of the East” is sure to deliver an epic, heart-pounding ride.
ROCK CLIMBING THE SANDSTONE CLIFFS
If ‘adventure on the rocks’ is more to your taste, gulp in the Gorge’s soaring sandstone cliffs that stretch over two miles and offer over 3000 established climbing routes. The New River Climbing School and Appalachian Mountain Guides are two local companies that can help you connect with your inner mountaineer.
HIKING TANTALIZING TRAILS
If you’re a nature lover who likes to keep your feet on the ground, you will find many tantalizing trails to sink your boots into. From the easy boardwalk strolls of Sandstone Falls and the Canyon Rim Boardwalk, to heart-pumping hikes, you’ll find them at the Gorge. The most popular Gorge hikes include: Endless Wall Trail, Long Point Overlook, Headhouse Trail, Wolf Creek Falls, and Bridge Trail. For a little WV mining history, check out Keymoor Miners’ Trail and Conveyor Trail, which let you explore old mine sites.
In addition, hike the three unique trails of nearby Grandview State Park: Castle Rock Trail, a challenging and unique trail which passes under towering rock walls and exposed coal seams; Tunnel Trail, a shady, lush trail that leads you along sandstone walls and moss covered rocks and through a cave-like tunnel; and the Grandview Rim Trail, a moderate trail which winds though deep forests and along the rim of the Gorge.
AERIAL ADVENTURES: ZIP-LINING THE GORGE
Do you “feel the need for speed”? Aerial thrill-seekers must experience the Gorge’s many zipline adventures. Zip across the ridgeline at up to 60 mph. Soar 200 ft. above the ground. Zig-zag through the treetops. For a unique sky-high experience, strap on your safety cable and traverse the 3030 ft. long, 24 in. wide catwalk suspended high above the New River, on the Bridge Walk.
